Poplar Street Lumber Wharves

Poplar Street Lumber Wharves

Poplar Street Lumber Wharves 1872
In the hey day of Philadelphia’s working waterfront, every pier was known for something. For Poplar Street, it was lumber. Hauled here from the forests of Eastern Pennsylvania, the wood was stacked in towering piles and loaded onto waiting ships. In 1872, the largest yard was Patterson & Lippincott. Today the pier is vacant land just north of the proposed Riverwalk Casino site.
