Barnes Foundation

Albert Barnes
The state court has granted permission for the Barnes Foundation to move from its site in Lower Merion Township to the site of the Juvenile Detention Center on the Parkway. The museum will house the impressionist painting collection of the late Dr. Albert Barnes - the world’s largest collection of such art outside of Paris - which includes works by Monet, Picasso, Van Gogh, and others. The museum will receive dedicated funding from the state to help with the relocation in what is projected to be a $100-million new building.  The state gave $25 million for the cause, adding to the $100 million already committed by Pew Charitable Trusts, the Annenberg Foundation, and the Lenfest Foundation. The new museum will complement the other cultural destinations on the Parkway, such as the Art Museum, Rodin Museum, and Franklin Institute. No specific date has been set for the move.  Address: 20th Street and Benjamin Franklin Parkway
