Although it sits alone on a dock surrounded by big box retail stores, the SS United States is an important piece of American maritime history.  Built in 1952, it is the fastest and largest passenger ocean liner ever built in the United States.  Its construction showed the world that America was at the forefront of innovation.  Though it was never called to duty as a troop carrier, as was the QE 2, it remains an inspirational footnote in America’s maritime history.
