Temple is a comprehensive public research university with more than 34,000 students. It was founded in 1888 and is now the sixth largest provider of professional education in the country.
Temple is a state-related university, meaning it receives public funding but is under independent control. Temple has other campuses in the area, but most of the 9,000 resident students live near the Main Campus, which is easily accessible by the Orange Broad Street Subway. The Main Campus is compact and urban in North Philadelphia about 1.5 miles north of Center City, bordered by Susquehanna Avenue to the north, Oxford Street to the south, 16th Street to the west, and 10th Street to the east. Recent development includes Avenue North, a contemporary residential and entertainment center located on Broad Street.
