An early form of “waterfront development” initiated when almost all the old industrial sites lay dormant, Pier 70 is now one of Philadelphia’s most popular shopping destinations. Aided by former Mayor Ed Rendell, developers assembled this land and built a suburban-style shopping node, consisting of multiple one-story warehouse “big box” stores and acres of sprawling surface parking. Though its design is questionable, the development has brought life to waterfront land that has been inactive for decades. Adjacent neighbors complain of the adverse effects this development has had on them, such as flooding during rain storms and weekend traffic. Stores include Wal-Mart, Target, Ikea, Lowe’s, Super Fresh, and Old Navy.
