On Dec. 20, this 16-acre vacant parcel of commercial land was selected as one of the two sites licensed for slot parlor development by the Pennsylvania Gaming Control Board. Licensing rights were given to Philadelphia Entertainment and Development Partners, an investor group that includes Comcast and Philadelphia 76ers owner Ed Snider and Foxwoods Development, which owns a successful casino in Connecticut. Plans call for a 2,500-seat showroom, waterfront entertainment promenade, restaurants and retail shops to supplement the 3,000-machine slot parlor, totaling projected development costs to over $560 million. Though the developer insists the complex will be designed to blend into the neighborhood fabric instead of using Las Vegas-type architecture, community residents continue to oppose the selection.
