The Shot Tower was the first of its kind in the nation and only one of five left intact. Originally built in 1808 for the production of hunting shot, it was the tallest building in Philadelphia at 142 feet. Its ammunition was used by American forces in the War of 1812. The tower remains a symbol of United States industrial independence as well as Philadelphia's renowned brickwork. The City bought the site in 1913 and can still be seen from I-95 and the Delaware River, hanging over South Philadelphia’s two-story rowhouse fabric. It is now surrounded by a neighborhood playground.
