Believed to be the first docking point of William Penn in 1682, this stretch of waterfront land represents Philadelphia’s largest attempt to develop a riverside park along the Delaware. Renowned Philadelphia city planner Ed Bacon saw this land as a logical terminus and transition to downtown Philadelphia, but existing uses do not maximize its potential. The two main facilities are the Great Plaza (at Chestnut Street), and the Festival Pier (at Spring Garden Street), which are used for outdoor concerts and large events. Numerous ships are docked here, namely the Spirit of Philadelphia cruiser, the floating restaurant Moshulu and the historic USS Becuna and USS Olympia as part of the Independence Seaport Museum. Other highlights of Penn’s Landing include a marina, amphitheater, brick promenade, historical pavers, a sculpture garden, and an ice skating rink.
