Give us examples of these values in your neighborhood:I love my neighborhood. However, I wish that every new tower (condo or otherwise) was required to put a wind turbine on its roof. I am not an engineer and I don't know if this idea is even feasable but with our demand for electricity always growing Philadelphia should become the first city to explore whether new construction sky scrapers (i.e. Comcast Center, Murano, etc.) could tolerate the stresses a wind turbine might cause. The faster we become green in inventive ways, the sooner we will leave the map of cities that do little to support a clean environment and move up the list of green cities.
Also I would love to see existing buildings get tax abatements or offsets for retrofitting wind power generating turbines onto their roofs.
At a minimum a tax break should be available for buildings that retrofit themselves with a green roof which have been prooven to reduce the urban heat island effect.
I also wish that as streets are repaved they would all be marked with bicycle lanes. I don't own a car. I use Philly Car Share when I must drive. I bike almost everywhere and would appreciate proper lanes for bicycle traffic all over the city.
What could you do to strengthen them?Ask the board of my co-op to retrofit our roof with eco-friendly equipment and roofing.
What gets in the way of them?A board of directors who are older than dirt and stuck in the 20th century.
